Time
Dear Parents,
Fifth class children are learning to read the clock and tell the time this term. This can be a difficult concept for children to grasp and they will need your assistance. When they are home with you, please encourage them to be more time aware. You can do this by making them aware of the time when they begin or end an activity. For example tell them what time it is when they wake up, start eating breakfast, leave for school, start and finish homework. Give them an amount of time to complete an activity. For example give ten minutes to eat breakfast and tell the child how many minutes above or below the ten minutes it took them to complete the task.
It would be very beneficial for your child to wear a wrist watch. A simple, inexpensive watch is all they need and these can be bought at various outlets throughout the town. We know many children have mobile phones and look at their phones to check the time. However as children are unable to use a mobile phone in school, a wrist watch is a good alternative. Children will be given tasks in class and for homework that will require the use of a wrist watch and stopwatch. They could use a sports stopwatch, a kitchen timer or the stopwatch on a mobile phone.
Your child will need your help in the coming weeks completing timed activities at home. Please help them grasp and master this mathematical concept by ensuring they use their clocks properly.
We thank you for your continued support and cooperation.
Kind regards,
